About

Hi there!
I’m Joshua Ong, a tech consultant and software developer.
I’m open and excited to learn and apply new knowledge, but I have a particular interest in Machine Learning and its near-limitless applications in the real world.
I’m a student of life and focused on self-improvement, always willing to learn from the positives, negatives, and every experience in between, and adapt those learnings into my everyday life. I work on my weaknesses and further improve my strengths to become a well-rounded individual.

Passions and Interests

My passions lie in learning, teaching people what I know, and building communities of like-minded people. I believe finding communities to be an integral part of is essential; they become your rock, places to call a second home, and places of constant growth and learning. Being a mentor-like figure for people brings me constant joy, not only in making a considerable positive impact on people’s lives, but also meeting a ton of people from wildly different backgrounds from my own and hearing their stories.
On the more technical side, I find open-source contribution interesting and something I want to try my hand at in the future, specifically the numerous MLOps projects that have been circulating recently. I’m currently working on an ML pipeline for a Toronto-based ML startup focused on modernizing and improving the efficiency of the construction industry. I’m also somewhat interested in fullstack development and trying to improve on my frontend and design skills.
Outside of tech, I’m a gamer, playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate more than I really should 😄. I’m a big Xenoblade fan as well! I also enjoy watching anime and reading manga; my favourites include Horimiya, Fate/Zero, Sangatsu no Lion, and more recently, Blue Lock.

Bio

I grew up in Ontario, Canada and discovered programming like how many others did, through high school. At the time, I didn’t know I wanted to pursue it as a career (I was leaning more towards Computer Engineering) until I started university, and I’ve been building up and polishing my skillset ever since. I graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science and Statistics.
I would consider myself a mix between a generalist and a hopeful specialist. I believe in building a strong foundation in general knowledge to effectively support your specialized knowledge and that general knowledge doesn’t have to solely reside in tech. Taking knowledge, ideas, and concepts from different fields and areas of the world and assimilating it into your being will not only improve your hard skills, but also your soft skills, emotional health and mental health. Additionally, having solidified general knowledge allows you to make contributions across different levels and areas within the same organization. As for myself, I’ve been fascinated by the concept of flow and understanding how I can consistently achieve it in everything I do.
